You’ve Got Questions?
We’ve Got Answers

1. What is substance use disorder (SUD)?

Substance use disorder is a progressive disease that causes people to lose control of the use of some substance despite the worsening consequences of that use. Substance use disorder is a complex disease that can be life-threatening.

2. Why do people with SUD require increased amounts of the substance they are abusing?

Over time, the brain is changed by the abuse of drugs or alcohol. The brain becomes desensitized so that more of the substance must be used to produce the same intoxicating effect, until it begins to negatively affect a person’s life. For many people, social, family, and work obligations fall to the side. They start to feel like something’s wrong if they aren’t under the influence and may become consumed with the need to recapture that original feeling.

3. Why do people take drugs or drink alcohol?

People may begin using drugs or drinking excessively for several reasons, including, enjoying the experience, wanting to avoid unpleasant feelings, desire to improve performance at work, school or sports, curiosity or peer pressure.

4. Can I overcome my addiction?

Addiction is a lifelong disease but people can recover and lead full lives. Getting help is essential to recovery. 6. What is relapse?

Addiction relapse occurs when an individual returns to using drugs or alcohol after a period of sobriety. Many people in recovery face a high risk of relapse due to lasting changes in brain structure and function caused by chronic substance use. These alterations can persist long after initial sobriety is achieved, making relapse a common challenge in the recovery journey.
